Zippety Doo Dah!

I had this album! I love, love, love this song:

  1. "Zippety Do Dah" is the theme song for "Splash Mountain" at Disneyland. The ride is themed according to the "Song Of The South". An odd investment on Disney's part given that they haven't rereleased the movie in ages.

  2. I think it might be deemed a little racist by today's standards? Like the Sambo books.

But I adored this record as a little girl. Wore it out.

  3. I had this album as a kid. Fess Parker and Buddy Ebson. Also, this one. The Sleepy Hollow one was so cool I taped it for my kids. I have a VHS video of my son aged 1 or so standing up and dancing to the "Headless Horseman", giggling his fool head off.

  5. Awww. That's so cute, El Pollo.

I have a vid of my kid saying "sufferin' succotash!" and strumming on a play guitar.
And he accidentally uses an "f" sound instead of an "s" for succotash. You can hear me giggling hysterically and him going "What, Mom?"

  6. Thanks for the invite, Darcy!:)

I often refer to the Tar Baby as a useful metaphor, and I've been told that it's racist. I hadn't thought of it that way it all. Who's right?

  7. We need a blackout on these potentially racist comments. Oh wait.

  8. You're welcome, amba! And a welcome to Ron, too!

I loved the Tar Baby story! I still use "please don't throw me in that briar patch!".

But yeah, I can see how in these hyper-sensitive times, the Tar Baby could be a Tar-get. Heh. :)

  9. The point about the Tar Baby was that the more involved with it you got, the less you could get away. It had nothing to do with its blackness, except that sticky tar happens to be black and that, perhaps, in the folk tale the Tar Baby was supposed to look like another familiar black person and thus tempt people to interact with it.
